Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.

I absolutely agree that leaders are all around us...and they may be the last to see themselves that way ;-)

What seems so critical to me is to choose our leaders based on our own values and whether they inspire to move forward in ways that really Matter.

How true that too often we are tempted to take the easy or familiar or "popular" path instead of really Looking at where we want to go and whether this will take us there in the long run.

Your willingness to express your thoughts here is a nice example of really saying what you mean and having the courage to share it with others -- this is what gives us the courage to share as well. Thanks!

I am going out on a limb here and express my thoughts on this.
I know that they can be torn apart by those who may be better thinkers than I, or better educated in the ways of things ......but here goes....

In my opinion, leaders are all around us. We can find a leader in our neighbor or our sister, our father or our minister. We will encounter many leaders in our lives. It is up to us as individuals when we encounter such people to decide if they are the leaders that we want to follow, if what they are leading in is something that we want to follow, and as such make them the leaders that they are or will become. The leaders who lead down a path that is already laid out can easily bring those who are afraid of the unknown to their path. There is ease in passing a lie that things as they are can continue forever. As such, it is quite comforting to accept lies and that 'known path'. This makes it quite easy to stick with everything that we are comfortable with, everything that we are taught through life and what is reinforced as the 'truth'.

Sarah:

I agree that the expectations for women are very high indeed.

Yet I don't see how society can change if the people most involved don't facilitate that very change. (I really wanted to say push for it ;-).

I would love to see women, not just those involved in politics, but all of us, object to media that takes space to comment on appearance, wherever that appearance is not relevant to the message.

I would love to hear female politicians and those around them "push back" against stories that emphasize appearance.

Can you imagine what might happen if we all wrote letters of protest every time there were appearance comments in "political" stories?

We live in a society where women have more opportunities than ever before, we can do anything we want to. The problem comes because we are expected to be able to do it all at once. Women are literally expected to be superwomen holding a job, looking after children, a home and a husband and at the same time have enough time to keep slim and denote beautifully apply makeup. The traditions of the past have simply combined with the ones of the present day making the expectations people have for women and that we have for ourselves highly unachievable. It infuriates me that female politicians are judged on their appearance rather than simply their ability and policy ideas however, I suggest that this is not going to change whilst society is still re-adjusting to this apparent equality we have achieved.

Robert and David:

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to comment on my article!

David: The position of Governor General may be incorporated, but my interest is in the real live person who accepted the role. And, if she is like most of us who accept roles in corporations at one time or another, the legal status of her role is probably not her primary focus. In fact, this is what impressed me about her interview -- she was focused on what she could bring to a role that she seemed to believe had value. And that's what counts to me -- if we all committed ourselves to roles with value in our own eyes and to making those roles contribute to our communities - what a great place to live/work that would be!

Robert: Along the same lines -- if she can stay as focused as she seems to be on how she can contribute and be true to her own values etc., then she will be protected against any attacks that are unfair and be able to extract the usefulness in any particular criticism as it relates to what she sees she needs to do. Keep her eyes on the compass and the horizon,so to speak. ;-)

Re: “Michaëlle Jean, the Governor General of Canada, was interviewed ...”

The Governor General of Canada is a “corporation sole”, according to Elizabeth II in this document. A “corporation sole” is defined and recognized as being a corporation.

“A corporation is a fiction, by definition, ...”, according to Patrick Healy in a statement found in evidence provided to Parliament's Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights in 2002.

“A corporation is a ‘fiction’ as it has no separate existence, no physical body and no ‘mind’”, according to Joanne Klineberg in a presentation to the Canadian Aviation Safety Seminar in 2004.

Do you know of anyone whose faith is such that she or he believes a corporation is real? Who would be a defender of faith like that?

Thank you for that insightful analysis of the article on the Governor General. i have found some of the criticisms leveled at her especially by the right leaning media such as the National Post to be a bit crass. There is no doubt that a lot of people would like to see her fail so that they can say, "I told you so." There is still after all a lot of racism in this country. i however hope that she will continue to do an excellent job and that these unfair attacks will not dampen her spirits.

Charles --

Yes! You also have touched on one of my key viewpoints -- that the politician really needs to conduct her- or himself like a business person building their business. They need to recognize that they are "selling" themslves and be clear about what the product is, if they want me to "buy it" AND they have to communicate and build the trust that leads me to "purchase" them, not just once, but repeatedly.

I don't think politics should be seen as a business in the profit/loss/balance fixation sense, but I do think there are strong parallels between politicians and entrepreneurs.

Thanks for your comment!
